Lizzie loves to travel and speak to groups! She has spoken at universities all over the country including UPENN, Barnard College, Westchester College, Middlesex College, Penn State, and Marymount Manhattan College and for mental health groups in Atlanta, Erie, Pittsburgh, Indiana, Rhode Island, Austin, and Tennessee. She and DETOUR have been featured on CNN, The Connie Chung Show, The Judith Regan Show, NPR, Time Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, The New York Post, Nylon Magazine, Rhode Island Magazine, and many other radio, television, web and print outlets. Lizzie developped a one hour documentary based on DETOUR with MTV and has been hired by HBO to consult on DETOUR, the feature. DETOUR was translated into Italian and Dutch. For speaking engagements, she typically offers an hour long program which includes a lecture, a reading and a question/answer session. In several instances she also held a memoir writing workshop. What People Are Saying
"Lizzie Simon is not a rock star, so what's she doing on MTV, why is she in Time Magazine and why do crowds surge out to see her wherever she goes? Because Lizzie Simon survived that hell in Paris and now she is talking about it."
Rhode Island Monthly
"Lizzie Simon exceeded my expectations for a dynamic, engaging, and inspiring plenary presentation. Her recounting of her recovery from serious mental illness and her commentary on current issues in mental health featured humor, solid information, compassionate insights and righteous indignation. Lizzie's engagement with our mixed audience of youth, family members of youth with mental health difficulties, and social service professionals was genuine; her observations about current issues in mental health services were astute; and her living modeling of "stigma-busting" was powerful. I can recommend Lizzie without reservation as a speaker-- she was well-prepared, well-informed, and well-spoken. Although she spoke on Saturday morning, the final day of our conference, every table was filled."
Lynwood J. Gordon, Director of Research and Training Center on Family Support and Children's Mental Health, Portland State University
Last spring we were fortunate to have Lizzie Simon visit the Washington College campus in Chestertown, MD. She presented a wonderful program which was open to all in the community. She connected with my students in a way which is not possible to achieve through readings or videos. Bipolar disorder became a reality for them through someoneone very close to their age. The value of this is immeasureable. Their journal entries following her visit showed me the depth of the impact. Thank you Lizzie for your open and honest sharing of who you are - an inspiration!
Sheila M. Barry, Ph.D, Professor, Washington College.
"Fortunately, authors like Lizzie Simon and Kay Redfield Jamison have stepped forward to de stigmatize bipolar disorder. Opening the doors to their personal lives has shed light on bipolar disorder and offered much needed help and hope to individuals and their families learning to live with what Dr. Jamison has described as the 'brilliant madness'."
The Saturday Evening Post
"Lizzie Simon's ingenious inquiry into the nature and treatment of manic depression--her own as well as others'--is a spellbinding revelation...It is bold, suspenseful, and completely fascinating."
John Berendt, author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
"Inspiring and enjoyable, Detour will change misconceptions about bipolar disorder and is a must read for anyone who is or who knows someone coping with a mental illness."
Kirkus Reviews
"Detour does for bipolar disorder what Prozac Nation did for depression--scopes it out from the viewpoint of someone who is young, hip, and vulnerable."
Peter Kramer, author of Listening to Prozac
"It's no easy thing to provide a glimpse into the churning melancholia of bipolar lows, but Simon manages it--with considerable effect indeed."
Booklist
"The 23-year-old Simon's Detour is an utterly unselfconscious, funny, harrowing description of her highs and lows."
The Village Voice
